Aldous Hunley was a Vendigrothian scientist and a member of the League of Scientists, a Vendigrothian organization.

He invented a submersible watercraft and planned on launching it on a noon. Nonetheless, the League of Scientists disputed his theories, claimed that they were wrong, and that he was placing himself in great mortal danger. Professor Jonathan Frink, his colleague and sometime adversary, claimed that his theories on both buoyancy and air recycling were based on sound principles, but that Hunley arrived to, at best, questionable conclusions regarding his ability to control these important factors. He feared that his plan for reestablishing buoyancy by means of pressurized air was doomed to failure. He said that when that ‘monstrosity’ submerges, he feared that it would never rise again. Frink implored him to do more tests before conducting field studies, but Hunley was determined to prove that his theories were correct, at any cost.

Some seven days later, he was classified as missing, and presumed dead, after his experimental watercraft failed to return to port at its previously scheduled time. “This is a sad day for all science,” commented Jonathan Frink. While Frink and Hunley disagreed on quite a few matters, they still respected each other’s opinions. “He will be missed,” Frink said. In a press conference where Hunley’s absence was publicized, Frink imagined that Hunley was resting somewhere on the ocean floor about now. The Engineering School of the University of Vendigroth was then searching for a replacement for Hunley.

His submersible resembled a large sea creature, and could be observed at Dixon’s Landing on the South Port before its inaugural run. His invention was scheduled to return in five days, but failed to do so. Frink predicted that as a probable result, and attempted to dissuade Hunley from continuing the test, to no avail. Currently, its remains can be viewed on the Isle of Despair.
