Virgil (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/824/afr9q9v.gif 1

Location: Crash Site

Human, Male
ST: 9, CN: 8, DX: 8, BE: 8, IN: 7, WP: 8, PE: 8, CH: 8

Skills: Necromantic White. Initial level: 1

Unless you really don't want him (and tell him that about five times), Virgil will automatically join your party when you start the game. Since he's a healer, Virgil is a useful companion to have around unless and until you reach a technical aptitude of around 35 (then his spells will generally fail against you).

Virgil is the most interesting follower in the game. He has a history that you'll slowly discover, and he adds the most dialogue of any of the followers.

Sogg Mead Mug

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/28/soggmeadmug.gif 1

Location: Shrouded Hills Inn. Initial level: 2

Half Ogre, Male ST: 15, CN: 8, DX: 10, BE: 7, IN: 3, WP: 8, PE: 8, CH: 8

To get Sogg to join your party, you just need to have a charisma of at least 9. Sogg will develop into an excellent fighter, and he doesn't care what you do in the game, so as long as you add him to your party early enough, he's a pretty good companion.

Jayna Stiles

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/705/janyastiles.gif 1

Location: Dernholm. Initial level: 6

Half-Elf, Female ST: 8, CN: 8, DX: 9, BE: 9, IN: 9, WP: 8, PE: 8, CH: 8

Skills: Herbology and Therapeutics (four schematics each).

If you have a technical aptitude of at least 10, then if you ask Jayne about her studies you'll eventually get the option of allowing her to join your party.

Magnus (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/11/magnusg.gif 1

Location: Tarant, stands outside of P. Schuyler & Sons at 44 Devonshire Way. Initial level: 8

Dwarf, Male ST: 10, CN: 10, DX: 9, BE: 8, IN: 9, WP: 8, PE: 8, CH: 7

Skills: Mechanical and Smithy (four schematics each)

If you have a positive alignment, he'll offer to join you (he won't join if you're an Idiot - IQ less than 5). Magnus is useful to have in your party at least a short time so he can make you balanced swords and pure ore.

Magnus Shale Fist is also the second most interesting follower in the game (Virgil is the first), with about a half dozen places where he adds dialogue. There are also two places in the game (at P. Schuyler & Sons and at the Iron Clan) where having Magnus in your party can earn you a fate point.

Gar

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/855/gar.gif 1

Location: Tarant (H.T. Parnell's). Initial level: 10

Human, Male ST: 11, CN: 8, DX: 12, BE: 8, IN: 9, WP: 10, PE: 8, CH: 8

Gar is short for Garfield Thelonius Remington III. If you have at least two ranks of persuasion, then when you ask him about tea you can trip him up into showing his true intelligence. After that you can ask H.T. Parnell about "Gar the human" and pretend to blackmail him, and Parnell will let you take Gar off his hands. Then when you talk to Gar next, you can either add him to your party, or you can release him and earn a fate point.

Dante

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/856/dantesmall.jpg 1

Location: Black Root (Sour Barnacle). Level 12

Click for stats

Skills: Air, Force, and Necromantic White

Dante will only join your party if you're working on the taxes quest for King Praetor of Dernholm. Then he'll join you in hopes of getting back into the king's good graces. If you have him in your party when you deliver the taxes to Praetor, then you'll either be able to speak up for him (and lose him) or say nothing (and keep him in your party).

(FREE SLOT!!!) Dog (Worthless Mutt)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/560/dogsmall.jpg 1

Full stats

Location: Ashbury (near the inn). Initial level: 12

You'll find Dog being attacked by a gnome the first time you see him. If you rescue him from the gnome, then Dog will join your party and not count against your follower limit. Since Dog will also earn master training in melee, he's one of the best followers in the game.

Note: It's not clear when the gnome starts kicking Dog. So if you want to add Dog to your party, you should head for him right away when you visit Ashbury for the first time. Otherwise the gnome might kill him.

DRAWBACKS:

  • With dog in your party you will not be able to board the train.
  • Dog doesn't have inventory (won't help you carry stuff)

Geoffrey Tarellond-Ashe (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/571/geoffreytarellondashe.gif 1

Location: Ashbury. Level: 12

Human, Male ST: 6, CN: 10, DX: 8, BE: 8, IN: 16, WP: 13, PE: 8, CH: 8

Skills: Fire, Force, and Necromantic Black

You'll find Geoffrey loitering next to the cemetery in Ashbury. If you ask him what he's doing there, he'll say he's studying the zombie problem. If you're evil, then at the end of the conversation he'll offer to join you.

Vollinger

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/842/vollinger.jpg 1

Location: Dernholm (King's Inn & Pub).

Male Gnome

Skills: Chemistry and Gun Smithy (four schematics each). Level 15

Vollinger will offer to join you when you meet him, and he's useful to have around as a gunsmith and a gunslinger, but he'll eventually betray you unless you can bypass a particular conversation at T'sen-Ang.

Chukka

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/560/chukka.jpg 1

Location: Tarant (Bates mansion). Level 16

Ogre, Male ST: 22, CN: 8, DX: 15, BE: 2, IN: 6, WP: 11, PE: 9, CH: 8

You might be able to get Chukka to join your party after you've investigated the Black Mountain Clan for Bates. He's a half-ogre and a powerful melee fighter, but he's also good-aligned and will take offense if you perform any evil deeds.

Torian Kel (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/90/toriankel.gif 1

Location: Ancient Temple. Level 20

Human, Male ST: 16, CN: 8, DX: 15, BE: 9, IN: 8, WP: 12, PE: 8, CH: 8

Torian Kel will join you if you can "re-flesh" him by giving him blood from the Dungeon of the Dragon Pool. You must also be evil.

Torian Kel is a capable fighter character, but there's a good chance he'll leave you at the start of the final battle.

Thorvald Two Stones

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/9/thorvald.gif 1

Location: The Isle of Despair

Starting Level: 23, Dwarf Male ST: 21, CN: 11, DX: 17, BE: 6, IN: 8, WP: 12, PE: 8, CH: 6

You'll need at least three ranks of persuasion to convince Thorvald to leave his position on the island and try to escape with you (ask him if he's a dwarf or a gnome). Then, if you want Thorvald to stay with you for the rest of the game, you'll have to remove him from your party when you approach the entrance guards at the Wheel Clan (they'll initiate a conversation and Thorvald will leave your party to rejoin his clan). After the conversation, it's safe to add Thorvald back in and leave him there.

Jormund

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/706/jormund.jpg 1

Location: Qintarra. Level 20

Dwarf, Male ST: 7, CN: 16, DX: 9, BE: 8, IN: 12, WP: 18, PE: 8, CH: 7

Skills: Fire and Force

To add Jormund to your party, you must clear him of Wrath's murder, even if all you can do is implicate Sharpe (who didn't do it). Jormund is a dwarf spellcaster, which means he must spend twice as much mana as other races when casting spells, and for that reason he isn't a very good follower.

Waromon

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/195/waromon.jpg 1

Location: Bedokaan Village. Level 20

Melokaan, sex unknown

To get Waroman to join your party, you must resolve the conflict with the poachers through dialogue. Then, if you tell the Bedokaan chieftain Kan Kerai your story, he'll suggest you take Waroman with you to help you out. Waroman will eventually gain expert training with the bow, and master training with melee weapons, so he's a good companion to have if you're diplomatic enough to get him.

Perriman Smythe

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/607/perrimansmythe.gif 1

Location: Tarant (Willoughsby residence). Level 25

Human, Male ST: 6, CN: 10, DX: 15, BE: 8, IN: 12, WP: 15, PE: 8, CH: 8

Skills: Fire, Necromantic White, and Phantasm

Smythe will only show up in Tarant once you've been to Qintarra. Then you'll find him exiting Willoughsby's residence (with Willoughsby). He has STRONG objections to necromancers. Will not join the party with Geoffrey unless high Charisma/Persuasion.

Z'an Al'urin (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/803/zanalurin.gif 1

Location: T'sen-Ang. Level 29

Dark Elf, Female ST: 5, CN: 18, DX: 9, BE: 9, IN: 19, WP: 18, PE: 8, CH: 8

Skills: Earth, Force, and Temporal

If you tell Z'an your name, she'll appreciate your honesty, and she might offer to join you.

  • You may need to be evil , reputation at 33, she would not join.

Sebastian

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/402/sebastianw.gif 1

Location: The Boil. Level 30

Human, Male ST: 9, CN: 8, DX: 12, BE: 8, IN: 13, WP: 8, PE: 18, CH: 8

Skills: Electricity and Explosives (four schematics each)

Sebastian will only show up after you've spoken to Edward Willoughsby about the "personal measures" he's taking in the Boil. Then Sebastian will join your party if you kill the two gang leaders in the Boil. Sebastian is carrying a flow disruptor shield, so you might want to add him long enough to acquire it from him.

Tollo Underhill

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/23/tollo.jpg 1

Location: Dernholm Dungeon (the pit). Level 30

Male Halfling

To get Tollo to join your party, you'll first have to rescue him from the dungeon, and then you'll have to shame him into staying with you. Even then he'll only join you if you're evil.

Weldo Rubin

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/811/weldorubin.gif 1

Location: Gateway to the Wastes. Level 30

Male Halfling

If you're persuasive or polite to Weldo, then he'll offer to join you. Weldo is a rare breed, a halfling adventurer. He is a classic “thief” type character. His skills include dodge, backstab, prowling, spot trap and pick locks (including expert status). But he starts out at level 25, so by the time you finally get to him, he'll probably be too weak to help you.

Raven (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/716/raven.gif 1

Location: Qintarra. Level 32

Elf, Female ST: 9, CN: 11, DX: 17, BE: 10, IN: 12, WP: 15, PE: 8, CH: 8

Skills: Water and Necromantic White

Raven will become available to join your party once you've discovered what happened to the Black Mountain Clan. She's a bow expert, so she's useful to have around if you need a support character (and have a lot of arrows).

Raven will object strongly if you have Z'an in your party and will force you to choose between them.

Franklin Payne (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/803/franklinpayne.gif 1

Location: Black Root. Level 35

Human, Male ST: 7, CN: 8, DX: 18, BE: 9, IN: 9, WP: 8, PE: 19, CH: 8

Skills: All disciplines (one schematic each)

Payne will only show up in his home after you've visited T'sen-Ang. If you ask him the most dangerous place he's ever been, he'll answer Thanatos, and if you mention that's where you're heading next, he'll offer to join you. You might want to add Payne to your party even if you don't plan to use him, just to get his elephant gun.

Loghaire Thunder Stone (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/706/loghaire.jpg 1

Level 35

Adding Loghaire to your party is an involved process. To start out, you must speak with his son Randver about the Stone and the Shape. Getting the dialogue option for that requires intelligence and possibly persuasion. Then when you finally meet Loghaire you must use Stone and the Shape to convince him to end his exile. Then he'll offer to join you after you've found out what happened to the Black Mountain Clan. He is another pure fighter type, specialising in melee and dodge.

Swyft

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/19/swyft.gif 1

Location: Qintarra, Starting Level: 9

Elf, Female ST: 11, CN: 7, DX: 12, BE: 9, IN: 7, WP: 9, PE: 8, CH: 8

Swyft will ask you to escort her to Tarant, and, if you agree, she'll stay in your party until you deliver her there, or until she gets fed up with you.

Lady Druella

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/28/ladydruellasmall.jpg 1

Lady Druella is involved in the melee mastery quest. If you "rescue" her for Sir Garrick Stout, then she'll follow you back to Dernholm before leaving your party. If you kill Stout for her and then cure Adkin Chambers (found in Stillwater) of blindness, you'll eventually find Druella and Chambers in Roseborough living happily ever after.

The Bane of Kree

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/402/baneofkree.gif 1

Location: The Void

Starting Level: 45, Human, Male ST: 20, CN: 10, DX: 19, BE: 6, IN: 8, WP: 16, PE: 8, CH: 7

The Bane of Kree will either attack you outright, or he'll agree to join your party and help you defeat Kerghan just for the glory of battle. The Bane of Kree is carrying Torien Kel's Ancestral Sword (one of the best weapons in the game), so be sure to get that from him regardless of what else you decide about him.

Arronax (!)

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/825/arronax.gif 1

Location: The Void prison

Starting Level: 50, Elf, Male ST: 12, CN: 10, DX: 14, BE: 9, IN: 16, WP: 18, PE: 9, CH: 10

Skills: Fire, Force, Meta, Necromantic White, Temporal

When you reach the Void you'll discover that Arronax has had nothing to do with the events in Arcanum. In fact, he'll inform you that he's been imprisoned for over 2000 years, and that it must be Kerghan who is planning to return from the Void.

To get Arronax to join your party, you must free him from his prison. To do that, simply kill the spirit snake patrolling in front of his cell. You must add Arronax to your party if you want to talk your way past Kerghan at the end.

Murgo

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/28/murgo.gif 1

Location: Vooriden

Starting Level: 30, Half Ogre, Male ST: 24, CN: 8, DX: 18, BE: 7, IN: 3, WP: 16, PE: 8, CH: 8

Murgo will join your party if you're attempting to fix the altar to Halcyon at Vooriden, and he'll leave your party as soon as you've completed the quest.

Gorgoth

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/46/gorgoth.jpg 1

Level : 50

When you find Gorgoth in the Void, he'll tell you that he's hungry. If you have a void animal carcass with you (found on the void lizards in the area), then he'll accept that for food and become available to join you.

Kraka-tur

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/407/krakatur.gif 1

Location: The Void

Starting Level: 45, Human, Male ST: 18, CN: 16, DX: 20, BE: 6, IN: 11, WP: 7, PE: 17, CH: 8

To add Kraka-tur to your party, you must either promise to get him out of the Void, or give him his journal back (the journal is found in the Lair of Bellerogrim). You might be able to "give" the journal to Kraka-tur even if you don't have it any more.

Temporary Followers

Doc Roberts

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/716/docroberts.gif 1

Location: Shrouded Hills

Starting Level: 30, Human, Male
ST: 9, CN: 10, DX: 12, BE: 8, IN: 18, WP: 8, PE: 18, CH: 8

Will accept your aid in defending the Shrouded Hills Bank from Bandits

Cynthia Boggs

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/842/cynthiaboggs.gif 1

Location: Isle of Despair

Boggs will ask you to rescue her from the Isle of Despair, and she'll tell you about a tribe of nomadic women on the other side of the island. However, the nomadic women won't sound thrilled about the idea of adding Boggs to their ranks, but you can still deliver Boggs to them or take her with you when you leave for Ashbury. Either way, Boggs will leave your party once you've completed her quest.

Followers Leveling up

  • When you hit level 50 you'll still be able to level up followers by getting enough XP for another level 50 (or 51), but anyone who's already 50 will stay at that level. So until that happens, Magnus will lag behind. The trick is to not have gained more levels than any follower you pick up. That way they'll never dip below your own level as long as you have them in the party at the moment you level up.
